The Sussex School of Practical Philosophy was started in 1978 as a branch of the School of Economic Science offering a systematic and disciplined approach to the study of natural laws governing relations in human society. This is done mainly by providing courses in Practical Philosophy and Economics-with-Justice.
The School's courses treat philosophy as a personal and practical attitude to life which gradually leads to a direct understanding of such universal philosophical questions as: Who am I? Where have I come from? What is my relationship with the universe? Throughout history philosophers all over the world have explored these issues to provide real and practical answers that work today.
Our courses on Practical Philosophy provide opportunity to consider philosophical ideas and questions of real relevance to all our lives in the company of like minded people. The emphasis is on learning from the most powerful of teachers: our own experience.
Does economics have anything to do with our daily life? Can economics produce a just and equitable outcome for all? Why does the economic world fail so catastrophically and so frequently? Can economics be directed towards stability and prosperity for all?
These questions may only be a few hundred years old but desperately need addressing today. Economics-with-Justice is a fresh and innovative approach to economics. Designed for the general public, it explores how economics can be directed towards stability and prosperity for all people, and why it doesn't always do so.
For both of these courses, the only requirement is an interest in the subject and an open mind. Available to everyone, they do not offer certificates or other paper qualifications, but something arguably much more important – a new, fresh appreciation of the world about us and the parts we play in it.
The same courses are available in other parts of the UK, details of which are available through the link on the left.
